The City That Never Sleeps

I stood today in front of Him. The symbol of faith. I shut my eyes tight, hit the rewind button in my head and allowed the tears to roll down.

All of us slouched against the wall. I prayed with everything I had that I'll keep hearing your breath. Your eyes were shut. Pulse was consistent but low. I wished for a miracle. That you'll open your eyes for one last time and call my name out. I knew that was too much to ask for. So, I was ready to settle for just a smile at all of us. You had all your grandkids by your side. That's how loved you were by God. Your loved ones were all by your side as you inhaled for the final time.

I trembled touching your lifeless body and walked away without turning back.

I texted you goodbye.

That's how the story ended.

And today marks a year.
