The City That Never Sleeps

Why can't the world actually be filled with nicer people? Who are not so self-centered, selfish. Who wouldn't mind just for abit of self-sacrifice for the comfort of another being.

Everyday as I am travelling, I never fail to encounter a selfish incident. It's either a person barging his/her way to make it onto the bus first, or rushing into the already packed train and yet squeezing through the sardine packed bodies as soon as they spot a empty seat. I mean c'mon we are all paying the same price for the mode of travel. Our public transport despite being very affordable and accessible is always packed. That's the reality. It's PUBLIC transport afterall. Plus the sheer number of foreigns on the tiny dot doesn't make things any better. There is no point kicking a fuss that something needs to be done to improve transportation, more trains, more cabins etc. etc. This is what we have got at this point of time. So make it a good ride while we are there. Shouldn't that be the case?

Which reminds me at Mustafa the other day, I was standing outside the fitting rooms to get an empty room for the mother to try on her jeans. Within seconds, a room was free and I walked towards it while my mother caught up behind. But before that, a Chinese guy barged into the room. My mother wanted me to let him be and decided to queue again when I actually told him that I was actually in the queue. And then the chap decides to ask me "where is the queue?" I mean c'mon am I supposed to carry a placard or smthg which reads "Queue behind me" or smthg. Seriously! And of coz I repeated it again to him and he decides to vacate the room nonchalantly. And I retorted back to my mother, there will be 10 others like him waiting to take advantage of the situation and act blur or whatever not because people like you decide to be nice.

And just today on the bus, a pleasant incident with an expat. Which makes me wonder is it just our Singaporeans who are so kiasu with regards to everything. Bubble tea queuing, chopping seats at coffee shops, expecting undivided attention from the waiter at a posh restaurant to what not. The bus was already packed and as the bus was approaching my bus stop, I was getting ready to alight since I was a distance away from the door. This expat who was even further than me, instead of pushing and barging his way through, decides to ask me even though I'm wearing my headphones if I'm gonna alight so that he doesn't have to hurry. I'm 100% sure if this was a Singaporean things would have been very different. They would have barged their way past me and pushed the 5 other individuals who were in the area of the door.

This is one of the main reasons why I wanna get as far away from Singapore as possible. Yes, no doubt, we boast the best airport, transportation system that gets us to where we need without much hassle, plenty of food choices, entertainment etc., a nation with a stable government, a strong police, army, navy, stable currency etc. etc. what's the point? The unfriendliness among fellow country men puts all the things we have amassed over the years to shame. Which makes me feel shameful to be a Singaporean. I'm sure we can do more as a country, rather than just recite the national anthem once every year, come August 9.
